Cork post punks Dead School have released their third single Incisions as a free download via SoundCloud. March 26th marked the release of Noctourniquet, the 6th studio album from Texan prog rockers The Mars Volta. Produced by guitarist Omar Rodriguez Lopez it is a concept album inspired by the nursery rhyme Solomon Grundy, and the Greek myth of Hyacinthus.
Vocalist Cedric Bixler Zavala reveals, “It’s about embracing life for what it should be. There’s a view of the elitist lifestyle - that being an artist is unattainable. I’m trying to write this story that reminds people that we’re all artists.”
Twin Shadow covers “Here Comes the Flood” by Peter Gabriel
Florida native George Lewis JR, better known as Twin Shadow, has covered the Peter Gabriel track Here Come the Flood. Originally taken from Gabriel’s 1977 album Peter Gabriel, Twin Shadow sticks pretty close to the original track where he is accompanied beautifully on piano by Twin Shadow member Wynne Bennett. The video was shot at Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles.
Nailing their 6-piece line up and 2 killer EPs in 2011, Slow Motion Heroes enter 2012 with FIFA Records and a new single taking its lead from the vibrant Pop EP. Putting aside the distortion of their alter egos (Hope is Noise, [r]Evolution of a Sun, Rulers of the Planet), Slow Motion Heroes’ new manifesto is crafting dynamic and memorable pop tunes. The vocal interplay between up to five singers at any given time, a hammond vs korg, several guitars and music brimming with hooks is the new order with Slow Motion Heroes. Paper Over Cracks rolls along with the soft top down. At just over 2 minutes long, the new single is a blast of pure escapism, hollering and soaring like an adrenaline shot and it’s gone before you know it. Not before leaving a sense of joy.
Slow Motion Heroes play their first UK show in London’s Borderline on March 24 with Irish dates and festival appearances line-up this summer.
Paper Over Cracksis released on FIFA Records on Friday, March 16th.
Feel Good Lost have this habit of putting on some amazing shows and once I saw the line-up for this one I knew it was going to be another good night. First up were Selebrities, a band from New York fronted by Maria Usbeck. Upon realising that the drummer was using an electronic drum-kit I was intrigued, maybe this band could make some interesting sounds after all. Unfortunately I was wrong. I’d like to clarify now that there was nothing wrong with their music, they performed well, but it was just a sound I’d heard too many times before. If you can imagine The Cure and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs having a baby, Selebrities would be just that. Having said that, they were pleasant on the ears, the vocals were excellent, executed perfectly and the guitar sound complimented them perfectly. A good support band, but they were just that, a support band. If they ever want to be at the headlining stage of a band’s career they will have to up their game.
Richie Egan aka Jape has won the Meteor Choice Music Prize for best Irish album 2011. The awards ceremony was held in Dublin’s Olympia theatre last night. Japes fourth album, Ocean of Frequency, received top honours at the awards to the complete surprise of Mr Egan “this year I didn’t think we’d win because the line-up is so great. I actually thought that Lisa Hannigan was definitely going to win… I’m just actually in shock that we won”.
Jape previously scooped the choice award for best Irish album for his 2008 Lp Ritual making him the only artist to win the award twice.
Jape plays a Dublin show in Whelan’s on March 16th supported by Ships and Reid.
Check out his video for The Oldest Mind directed by Cork visual artists Brendan Canty and Conal Thomson of Feel Good Lost.
